Welcome to the visual diary for April…

The Tramontane has been blowing and then abruptly stopped, only to be replaced with high winds from Spain, which are, at least, warmer… so the weather is once again the topic of conversation as April commences. Leaves are unfurling as showers have nourished the dry earth, and there is suddenly a cloak of green, mingling with blossoms and poppies as fields fill with colour. The cherry orchards are changing as white petals fly like confetti and wildflowers line the routes. Rows of grapevines are just starting to shoot…

Sunday 3rd April. Rising early to visit the patisserie for my delicious ‘ritual’ Sunday breakfast (they often sell out), I was amazed to see a queue outside the newsagent’s, waiting for the doors to open at 8am… clocks can be set by village habits.

Friday 16th April. Hail and shine this week as blossoms depart, bringing tiny fruit in the cherry orchards, and the plane trees lining the routes burst into leaf. Dinner is now on the terrace, enjoying the new wave of warmth engulfing us. The last fire has been lit and optimism fills the air as locals shed winter layers…
