Panier of Plenty

Célestine La Vedette

Randonnées are on hold, weeds are taking over the garden and
daily life now revolves around the needs of Mademoiselle
Célestine. Mina, who is not allowed inside, has been sneaking
in at every opportunity to survey the strange new arrival.
Creative projects, which ‘before’ consisted of writing and
painting, have now taken a new form as we welcome Célestine
and build a ‘bébé space’ in the bergerie, which calls for a
bit of ingenuity – a tailor-made solution to convert our
single bedroom into a comfortable ‘two room’ layout.

A ‘work in progress’ in my new atelier in the walled garden, Célestine’s personalised diary for ‘Els Patufets’ (Catalan) crèche à Maureillas-las-Illas. She will have a period of adaptation starting 9th July and start to socialise in August…

Preparing for Célestine’s first birthday…

Commencing 'la toise'

Commencing ‘la toise’

Toise is the term used for a growth chart here. I guessed the height, using my own as the centre of the sunflower (by chance) and adding a bit more…

1 Toise was exactly 6 pieds (feet) (about 1.949 metres) in France until 1812.
1 Toise was exactly 2 metres in France between 1812 and 1 January 1840 (mesures usuelles).
1 Toise = 1.8 metres in Switzerland.
1 Toesa = 6 pés (feet) = 1,98 m in Portugal.
According to an article written in 1866, during investigation of various measuring standards, the toise was determined to be exactly 1,949.03632 mm.

Painting Célestine’s name for the crèche has led me in a new direction; painting other girl’s names as gifts. She has received many handed-down clothes and toys, and so many beautiful presents – as a ‘thank you’ I am now inspired to create little name plaques…

January 2016. New inspiration! I have been saving the most interesting baby clothes and started making a new wardrobe for Célestine’s doll, Gabrielle. She came dressed in Paris fashion and now has a ‘spring collection’ with a butterfly and owl theme…

This was a strange type of pouch/folder with a button, I cut it, added ties from the cot protector and found a bird to sew on, continuing the theme…
