Panier of Plenty

Défilé de géants

One of the many wonders of living here (in ‘Catalunya’) are the surprise festivals… it is easy to stumble across an event by chance and to enter the spirit… in this case, with fanfare! Puigcerdà hosted more than 50 géants this Sunday, lovingly hand-made, and animated by members of associations who guard sacred traditions and ritually parade their particular characters throughout the year. I have seen them perform, but never gathered together in such great numbers. They stood majestically in rows lining the main square, then on cue, accompanied by Catalan instruments (banda or fanfare), came to life by twirling and then ‘dancing’ before moving off into the pedestrian streets of this lively town in Cerdanya (Cerdagne). I am curious and need to find out more about their origins…
